Every year, decade after decade, we see new trends in the world of interiors. Some things take off, whilst others never seem to leave the starting line. It’s impossible to predict exactly what will become a must-have accessory, but we can make some educated guesses at the interior trends we can expect to see in 2020.
So what can we expect to see growing popular in interiors in 2020?
Bold colours
We are likely to see an increase in the use of bold colours in our homes this year. Gone are the days when magnolia was the height of fashion. This year, I expect that we will see a growing trend for bold fabrics, soft furnishings and one off pieces. This could be through the addition of bold coloured curtains, a brightly coloured rug, or simply bold cushions. Adding just one brightly coloured item to an otherwise neutral room will be the way to make a statement this year.
Upcycled furniture
We are growing increasingly aware of the need to lead more sustainable lives, and there will be a growing trend for re-purposing reusing pieces of furniture.
Upcycling is already incredibly popular, with some people even choosing to build a business from it, and we are likely to see that popularity grow in 2020.
Orangeries
People wanting to extend their homes without the full-blown cost and upheaval of a brick extension may opt for the addition of orangeries to their home. Orangeries are taking over conservatories rapidly due to the way they are built. They offer all the extra light of the conservatory and the ease to build, but they tend to look more like part of the home. Conservatories tend to look like they’ve just been stuck onto the back of the house, whilst orangeries have a more finished appearance.
Carpets
Over the last few decades, wooden flooring and laminate flooring have been incredibly popular in our homes. I predict that we will see a growing number of homes switching back to carpets for their living rooms over the next year or so.
Carpets these days are far easier to clean and much more hard wearing than they have ever been before. They also provide warmth and are much more comfortable than hard floors, particularly for children who spend a lot of their time playing on the floor. I think we’re likely to still see “sensible” colour choices though that won’t show up every single spill or stain! Dark greys will be a popular choice.
Personalisation
There has been a trend for people to alter their homes purely to make a profit from them. This year, I think we are likely to see an increase in the number of people doing things to their homes just because it suits their taste. This could mean striking colours on the walls and unusual pieces of furniture. People are becoming far more comfortable with showing off their individuality and unique tastes than ever before, and this will show through in how we decorate our homes in 2020.
